# IBL online mode

These guides show you how to align IBL probe insertions directly from the Alyx database, with
`alignment-gui-ibl`. In this mode the GUI downloads the data for an insertion, and uploads the
alignment and its quality assessment back to Alyx, instead of reading and writing files on your
own disk. How this differs from working with local files is explained in
{ref}`explanation-offline-and-online-modes`, and the command's options are listed in
{ref}`ref-command-line`.

This mode is for IBL members with an Alyx account, and needs the `ibl` extra (see
{ref}`howto-install-extras`).
